Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For adults, the CDC uses 18.5 to 24.9 as the healthy weight range.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI does not separate muscle from fat, so very muscular people and older adults can get misleading results. It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.
Can I use this for children?
For ages 2 to 19, BMI must be compared with growth charts by age and sex. Ask a doctor about the BMI percentile.
