A word is any run of letters or numbers. Hyphenated words like “well-known” and contractions like “don’t” count as one word.
How is reading time calculated?
We use 238 words per minute for silent reading and 150 words per minute for speaking, which are common averages for adults.
Do emoji count as one character?
Yes. Emoji and accented letters count as one character each, the way you see them.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
No. Counting happens in your browser. Your text is kept only in this browser tab so other text tools can reuse it, and it is cleared when you close the tab.
