Paste two versions of a text and see exactly what was added, removed or changed, line by line or word by word.

How to use the text diff checker

  1. Paste the original text on the left and the changed text on the right, or open two .txt files.
  2. Choose to compare by lines, words or characters, and side by side or inline.
  3. Added text is green and removed text is red. Turn on Show only changes for long texts, or download the changes as a .diff file.

What do the colors mean?

Red is text that is only in the original (removed). Green is text that is only in the changed version (added). In changed lines, the exact words that differ are marked.

Which mode should I use?

Lines is best for code, lists and long documents. Words is best for edited paragraphs. Characters finds tiny changes such as a missing comma or a swapped letter.

What is a .diff file?

The standard format used by Git and the patch command. It lists the changed lines with a few lines of context around them.
