Frequently asked questions
How is an IPv4 address turned into a number?
Each of the four parts is a byte: a × 16,777,216 + b × 65,536 + c × 256 + d. 192.168.1.10 becomes 3,232,235,786.
Why store IPs as integers?
Numbers sort correctly and make range checks fast, so databases often store IPv4 as a 32-bit integer.
Does it work with IPv6?
Yes. IPv6 addresses become 128-bit numbers, which are shown in full.
